what now?

I got laid off Tuesday. It's ok though, that job sucked anyways. I'm even sort of glad it happened, because the job made me gripe all the time and I'm sure Amy was just about sick of it. Kudos to Amy for putting up with it for this long <3

This is the plan now:

Get a job quickly to pay the bills.

Get a job that will let me go to school and work.

Go back to school.

I took a practice college mathematics placement test and surprisingly got an 82. This leads me to believe that my prior hatred of math and subsequent ignorance of it were proportional to how bad my teachers were in public school. If you can't show an interest for what you're teaching, regardless of the subject, just don't do it. My Alabama History teacher was awesome, and that class was fucking stupid. Anyways, I'm going to take the prerequisite math courses for the calculus classes first, just to brush up on some stuff that I missed because I was bored out of my skull. It's going to be summer before I can get back in school so that should give me plenty of time to find a good job.

I was listening to Einstein's Relativity Audiobook last night as I fell asleep. I had some of the strangest dreams I've ever had. I won't go into too much detail, but I'll just say it involved bullets, spacetime, and anal sex. Even stranger than the dream I had the other night when Amy busted open my acoustic guitar and there was a twenty pack of Tyson chicken wings inside.

I'll be fine.

Ruby on Motherfuckin' Rails

Ruby. On Rails.

I've been hearing the buzz over this for nearly two whole years but I didn't see what all the fuss was about until I actually tried it.
Get this:

PHP
Make the database schema. Make a program and HTML form to put info in. Make a program that pulls it out and prints it. Make a program and HTML form to edit it. Make a program to delete it. Make a program and HTML form to change it.

RoR
Make new ruby application. Make database schema. Make model. Make Controller. Put in one line: scaffold :whatever.

That gets me to the exact same point in the application. That's it. Fully functional. Yeah. I can actually add a few more lines to validate the stuff entered into the form AND display errors if it gets the wrong stuff. YEAH.

I'm going to write my blog using ruby soon. I'm a noob to the whole framework but I'm shooting at one day to get the code working.
I don't know if it's ADOdb that sucks (not likely) or the stupid shared host's server. They are forcing me to name the database baycompu_<something>1 .
Maybe planet of the apes wasn't quite as absurd as we thought.

After reading this article, I started to think a lot about evolution of species on Earth, including our own. Panspermia, or the theory that "life began inside comets and then spread to habitable planets across the galaxy", while pretty far out - is actually a pretty good idea. It would answer a lot of questions that I have about evolution on our planet. Take into account the vast variety of lifeforms on this planet. Evolution over millions of years have given us a very wide array of creatures, yet not a one of them is sentient like we are. The generally accepted theory is that we evolved from apes. That's not too hard to believe I guess, but then why are there still apes in the world? Apes, biologically, are very similar to human beings, but what is holding them back? Why can't they talk and think for themselves? How is it that one creature evolved to think and act on something other than pure natural instinct by which all other life on this planet is restricted to? The BBC had an article earlier this year about Chimpanzees using spears to hunt other small primates. Chimpanzees are a perfect picture of evolution at work. They are using tools. Perhaps not long into the future they will utter words, communicate with each other with some kind of vocabulary, if they don't already. Those that would deny evolution are blind to it happening right under their noses.

Panspermia, would be that missing link that evolution needs to work for mankind. The idea that we did not originate on our lovely blue planet would not sit well with some, most religious people would scoff at the idea. I think another important thing to think about is whether we came naturally, in an asteriod as the theory suggests, or could it have not been merely chance, but a deliberate action that put us on this planet?

Money As Debt

Paul Grignon's 47-minute animated presentation of "Money as Debt" tells in very simple and effective graphic terms what money is and how it is being created. It is an entertaining way to get the message out. The Cowichan Citizens Coalition and its "Duncan Initiative" received high praise from those who previewed it. I recommend it as a painless but hard-hitting educational tool and encourage the widest distribution and use by all groups concerned with the present unsustainable monetary system in Canada and the United States.

I'd like to give a big thumbs down to the guys who started calling their online seminars "webinars". My autospell checker is telling me that this is not a word. Pffft.

I have to go to the bank tomorrow. Stupid guy teller put my money in someone else's account either because he is an asshole or he's stupid. The weird thing is that he GLARED at me EVILLY when I handed him the deposit slip and stuff, he prolly stuck it in his own account or something. Maybe it was an honest mistake, and normally I'd give somebody the benefit of the doubt, but he was a jerk. w/e.

I'm gonna go youtubing. Peace.

It's so easy for the rest of you.

Part of me is like "Go. Party. Make merry. Have a good time." Part of me is saying "If you stay home you're safe. You'll face no ridicule. You'll not be uncomfortable."

Is this a disease? I'm scared to death.
